Abstract
The juice of date palm, extracted from the palm tree, is a natural substance rich in
biologically active compounds, making it of great importance in nanotechnological
applications. This study aimed to synthesize selenium nanoparticles and evaluate their
biological activities using date palm sugars. After the work we carried out, we obtained a
normal yield in all studied samples. From a technical standpoint, to characterize these
nanomaterials and understand their properties, we utilized X-ray diffraction technique(XRD),
which showed remarkable results. Consequently, the crystalline size of the zinc sample was 21
nm, selenium sample was 14 nm, and the zinc-selenium integration was 17 nm. Additionally,
UV-visible(UV) spectroscopy results revealed that compounds in the samples fell within the
same theoretical range: Zn (340 nm), Se (379 nm), and pure extract (409 nm). Conversely,
infrared spectroscopy unveiled (FT-IR) the presence of hydrogen and carbon bonds in the
samples, distinguishing the nanoparticles. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy(SEM)
clarified the nano shape and types of atoms present, namely zinc selenite(ZnSe), selenium
oxide(SeO2), and zinc oxide(ZnO). Furthermore, the results of biological activities
demonstrated strong and effective distinction in activity against bacteria by eliminating four
known strains, including E. Coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus, and Bacillus
subtilis. Additionally, strong activity against hemolysis was recorded with Zn-SeNPs at 81.41%
and Se-NPs at 98.62%, indicating powerful antioxidant capability and effective protection
against red blood cell breakdown. Another promising biological activity studied for selenium
nanoparticles SeNPs included DPPH, FRAP, Beta-carotene, in addition to anti-inflammatory
and anti-coagulant activity.
