Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore the relationship between language and identity in Little Bee, examining how linguistic expression shapes and reflects the characters’ evolving identities throughout the novel. The dissertation adopts a postcolonial approachto explore themes and characters’ experiences in Little Bee through deep textual analysis, investigating how issues of migration, trauma, and identity are shaped by the legacy of colonialism. As a result, post-colonial African writers often blend native and colonial languages to express identity, reclaim cultural heritage, and resist the enduring impacts of colonialism. Similarly, in Little Bee, Chris Cleave illustrates how language functions as a reflection of both personal and social identity, serving as a tool for survival, resistance, and empowerment within the postcolonial world.
