Abstract
The ketogenic diet is a low-carbohydrate and fat-rich diet. Its medicinal uses have been
known since the early 1920's as a treatment for epilepsy where gave very encouraging results.
Today there are many studies on the use of ketogenic diet to treat many diseases, whether it is
added to pharmaceutical treatment or used alone. Recent work over the last decade or so has
provided evidence of the therapeutic potential of ketogenic diets in many pathological
conditions, such as diabetes, Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, cancer and coronavirus
disease 2019. The goals of this review is to shed light on the effectiveness of ketogenic diet in
treating or improving the treatment of these diseases, also, we take a closer look at the
mechanism of action and the method of initiation the ketogenic diet. Moreover, we will learn
about the types of ketogenic diet, as well as the use of ketogenic diet in sports and weight loss.
