Critical Analysis of the American Ideology towards Russian-Ukrainian War in Selected US Newspapers

Abstract

This study investigates American ideology regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war, as depicted in mainstream Western media, particularly focusing on U.S. newspapers. It examines the framing of the conflict and the positions taken by these outlets. Using qualitative methods, 50 news articles from five prominent American newspapers were analyzed. The study employed Van Dijk's (2005) ideological discourse analysis for micro-level data, and Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis for macro-level data. The analysis identified 25 discursive devices and their linguistic uses that shaped power dynamics and ideologies. Five main themes were constructed, collectively revealing how American media portrays the Russo-Ukrainian war and reflects underlying American ideology. The findings suggest a biased media approach, emphasizing Ukrainian suffering while misrepresenting and demonizing the Russian perspective.
