Reading Global Social Justice Events: Algerian English Literature and Civilization Students’ Perspectives on Black Lives Matter Movement

Abstract

Research and studies on global social justice issues have been on the rise recently, especially on the perspectives and attitudes towards The Black Lives Matter movement, which has been controversial since its inception in the Trayvon Martin verdict in 2013, aiming to raise awareness of police brutality and racial injustice. This study explored Algerian English literature students' understanding of social justice issues by investigating their knowledge and attitudes toward global social issues, particularly the Black Lives Matter movement. An online survey was distributed and completed by 53 students of English literature and civilisation in the Algerian Higher Education context. The survey generated mixed data, both quantitative and qualitative. Descriptive data analysis was used to explain the trends and insights from the questionnaire's quantitative data, whereas thematic data analysis was used for qualitative data. The study revealed three main findings: students presented positive attitudes toward the BLM movement, which they strongly supported and actively engaged with the movement. Despite knowing where and how the movement started, students were unaware of the movement's timeframe. Additionally, the results indicated that students believed that media coverage might have affected their interactions with the BLM movement on social media. Therefore, the implication of these findings is to enrich the university curriculum, particularly in this field, to hold safe spaces for students to accommodate these discussions, such as establishing clubs, reading groups, and forums on the university’s LMS platform. تزايدت الأبحاث والدراسات حول قضايا العدالة الاجتماعية العالمية في الآونة الأخيرة، خاصة فيما يتعلق بوجهات النظر والمواقف تجاه حركة "حياة السود مهمة"، التي أثارت جدلاً منذ بدايتها في الحكم على ترايفون مارتن عام 2013، بهدف رفع مستوى الوعي بوحشية الشرطة. والظلم العنصري. استكشفت هذه الدراسة فهم طلاب الأدب الإنجليزي الجزائري لقضايا العدالة الاجتماعية من خلال التحقيق في معارفهم ومواقفهم تجاه القضايا الاجتماعية العالمية، وخاصة حركة حياة السود مهمة. تم توزيع وإكمال استطلاع عبر الإنترنت من قبل 53 طالبًا من طلاب الأدب والحضارة الإنجليزية في سياق التعليم العالي الجزائري. ولّد المسح بيانات مختلطة، كمية ونوعية. تم استخدام تحليل البيانات الوصفية لشرح الاتجاهات والأفكار من البيانات الكمية للاستبيان، في حين تم استخدام تحليل البيانات الموضوعية للبيانات النوعية. كشفت الدراسة عن ثلاث نتائج رئيسية: قدم الطلاب مواقف إيجابية تجاه حركة BLM، والتي دعموها بقوة وشاركوا فيها بنشاط. وعلى الرغم من معرفة أين وكيف بدأت الحركة، إلا أن الطلاب لم يكونوا على علم بالإطار الزمني للحركة. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، أشارت النتائج إلى أن الطلاب يعتقدون أن التغطية الإعلامية ربما أثرت على تفاعلاتهم مع حركة BLM على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي. ولذلك فإن المغزى من هذه النتائج هو إثراء المناهج الجامعية، خاصة في هذا المجال، لتوفير مساحات آمنة للطلاب لاستيعاب هذه المناقشات، مثل إنشاء الأندية ومجموعات القراءة والمنتديات على منصة LMS بالجامعة.
