Abstract
In the history of alternative medicine, medicinal plants have held a
prominent position, contributing effectively to the treatment of various
diseases, particularly those related to liver function disorders. In this
context, the present study was conducted to assess the positive and
negative effects of medicinal plants used in the treatment of liver
diseases.
To achieve the study objectives, a field survey was carried out through
the distribution of questionnaires to a sample of the population in
southeastern Algeria (El Oued – Touggourt).
The survey results showed that the most commonly used plant for liver
diseases was milk thistle (Silybum marianum) (21%), followed by
turmeric root (12%)(Curcuma longa), and dandelion root
(11%)(Taraxacum officinale ).
As for the most commonly used plant parts, the leaves were reported in
26% of cases, followed by seeds (20%) and roots (19%).
Regarding the form of preparation, plant powder was the most
frequently used (56.55%), while extracted oil recorded the lowest usage
rate (9.9%).
With respect to the physiological effects resulting from the use of these
plants, 95% of participants reported healing, while 4% experienced
disease progression. This indicates a clear effectiveness of the medicinal
plants used in this study in alleviating liver disorders.
Concerning the evaluation of therapeutic efficacy, 57% of participants
rated it as good, 20% as excellent, and 23% as moderate.
These results support the existence of significant positive effects of
medicinal plants in this field, with limited adverse effects reported.
