Vilification of the Other - the Portrayal of Arabs in Hollywood: A Critical Analysis of True Lies and The Siege

Abstract

الملخص : تتناول هذه الدراسة الصور النمطية للعرب في أفلام هوليوود، وتحديدًا فيلمي "الحصار" (1998) و"أكاذيب حقيقية" (1994). وتهدف إلى تفكيك الكليشيهات الاستشراقية في الأفلام المذكورة آنفًا، وشرح كيف تُفاقم هذه الصور رهاب الإسلام، واستكشاف السرديات المضادة للسينما العربية التي تُشكك في هذه الصور النمطية. يستخدم هذا البحث تحليلًا نقديًا نوعيًا من خلال استخدام نظرية ما بعد الاستعمار وتحليل الخطاب النقدي لدراسة كيفية تصوير فيلمي "الحصار" و"أكاذيب حقيقية" للهويات العربية كصور نمطية. وتشير الدراسة إلى أن فيلم "الحصار" يُصوّر العرب الأمريكيين كتهديدات أمنية، ويدعو إلى الأحكام العرفية والتنميط العنصري، ويتوقع سياسات ما بعد 11 سبتمبر، بينما يُصوّر فيلم "أكاذيب حقيقية" الهويات العربية، ويُصوّر الإرهابيين على أنهم عبثيون، مُتجاهلين الثقافة العربية. وتخلص الدراسة إلى أن تصوير هوليوود يُثير رهاب الإسلام الحقيقي، بينما تُتيح القصص العربية فرصًا لتمثيل حقيقي. ⦁ Abstract This study examines stereotypical portrayals of Arabs in Hollywood films namely The Siege (1998) and True Lies (1994). It aims to deconstruct Orientalist cliche tropes from the above mentioned films; to explain how such portrayals increase Islamophobia ; and to explore Arab cinema counter-narratives challenging these stereotypes. This research employs qualitative critical analysis through the use of postcolonial theory and critical discourse analysis to examine how The Siege and True Lies portray Arab identities as stereotypes. The study indicates that The Siege represents Arab-Americans as security threats, calling for martial law and racial profiling, and anticipating post 9/11 policies and True Lies stereotypes Arab identities and represents terrorists as absurd, dismissing Arab culture. The study concludes that Hollywood representations spur real Islamophobia, whereas Arab stories create possibilities for genuine representation.
