Abstruct: This dissertation offers a postcolonial reading of Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, examining how the novel engages with themes of identity, power, and resistance in the aftermath of 9/11. Drawing on key postcolonial theories—including Edward Said’s Orientalism, Homi Bhabha’s concepts of hybridity and the “third space,” and Frantz Fanon’s psychological analysis of decolonization—the study explores the ways in which Hamid’s work challenges Western hegemony and reconfigures narratives of the global South. The analysis is structured in three parts. First, it contextualizes the novel within postcolonial discourse, focusing on the deconstruction of East-West binaries, the role of mimicry and ambivalence, and the psychological dimensions of decolonization. Second, it investigates the post-9/11 ideological shifts that shape the novel’s backdrop, particularly the institutionalization of Islamophobia, surveillance, and the marginalization of Muslim identities. Finally, it examines the novel’s formal and thematic strategies, including its use of an unreliable narrator, open-ended conclusion, and counter-discursive resistance to dominant narratives. Central to this study is the protagonist Changez, whose transformation from a Princeton-educated capitalist to a “reluctant fundamentalist” embodies the tensions between assimilation and resistance. The title’s irony underscores the novel’s critique of neoliberal capitalism and reductive stereotypes, reframing “fundamentalism” as a rejection of Western ideological dominance rather than religious extremism. By situating Hamid’s work within postcolonial and post-9/11 frameworks, this dissertation argues that The Reluctant Fundamentalist not only exposes the fractures in multicultural idealism but also reimagines identity as a fluid, transnational construct shaped by historical and political forces.
