Social Injustice and Female Oppression in the Middle East: Analyzing The Stoning of Soraya M Novel 1990

Abstract

الدّراسة تتناول موضوعا مثيرا للجدل عبر القرون في مختلف أنحاء العالم، يتمثل في الاضطهاد الاجتماعي والظلم الموجّه ضدّ النّساء؛ وذلك من خلال تحليل رواية " رجم ثريا" الصادرة عام 1990 للكاتب الفرنسي "فريدون صاحب جم". تسرد هذه الرواية قصة امرأة تعرّضت للظلم الشديد والانتهاك الصّارخ من طرف زوجها الذي افترى عليها ومجتمع صدّق هذه التهمة ليكون مصيرها القتل بكل وحشية على مرأى الجميع. كما تكشف الرواية كيف تتعرض النّساء للقمع والاضطهاد في المجتمعات التي يسيطر فيها الرجال على كلّ مقاليد السلطة. أمّا عن المنهج المعتمد في تحليل القصة فقد كان وصفيا تفسيريا يستهدف التركيز على تاريخ الحركة النسوية ومبادئها مع إبراز مفاهيمها ونظرياتها من خلال التّطرق للوضع غير المتكافئ بين الجنسين في مجتمع يتميّز بالعديد مكن مظاهر العنف ضد المرأة الذي استعمل فيه الدّين وسيلة لقمع النّساء ومنح الرجل الأفضلية والتفوق، وهذا ما صوّره صاحب جام في روايته. اختتمت الدّراسة بالتأكيد على أنّ ما حدث لثريا في هذه الرواية مشهد يمكن أن تتعرض له النّساء في مجتمعات مختلفة وفي عصور متعددة، ومنه فالكاتب لم يكن أديبا أو مجرد قاص ناقل لأحداث هذه القصة المأساوية هدفه امتاع القارئ وتشويقه بقدر ما كان حريصا على فضح جرائم تقترف في حق النّساء في مجتمعات ذكورية تتخذ الدّين ذريعة لتحقيق ما يصبو إليه الرّجال. The Study tackles a debatable topic that has persisted across centuries and around the world, which is the social oppression and injustice against women communities. This is explored through an analysis of the novel The Stoning of Soraya M. (1990) by the French journalist Freidoune Sahebjam. The book narrates the story of a woman subjected to extreme injustice and brutal violence by her husband. Soraya ends up being falsely accused of adultery by her husband, leading to her horrific execution under complete social acceptance. The novel further presents how women endure oppression and persecution in societies where men monopolize all forms of power. The study adapts the qualitative approach by presenting Feminist Theory and Intersectional Feminism in the first chapter. The second chapter includes their history, principles, and theories which serve the analysis of the events of the true story. The analytic approach focuses on shedding light on the imbalance between genders, the societal factors that represent violence against women, as well as the weaponization of religion to suppress women and perpetuate male dominance and superiority, which are themes vividly portrayed by Sahebjam. The study concludes by emphasizing Sahebjam’s reflection on reality. He assumes that women may face this in diverse societies. Through presenting what the work reached of results, it is worth mentioning that the author is not a mere storyteller seeking readers' captivation and entertainment but rather a presenter of crimes committed against females in the patriarchal systems that exploit religion to fulfill men’s greedy desires and selfish needs.
