Abstract

Scorpion envenomation is a problem that threatens public health in many regions of the world, including Algeria. This work aim is highlighting the epidemiological situation of scorpionism through the study and analysis of statistical data series related to scorpionism in the province of the El-Oued (Algeria) for the period from 1996 to 2017. The results of the study show that the climatic, geographical and agricultural conditions prevailing in the study area made it more suitable for the scorpion’s propagation. As a result, more than 124929 stings cases were reported, of which 143 deaths cases. scorpion stings cases were reported in all municipalities, moreover, rural areas are the most threatened by scorpionism danger compared to urban areas by 63% compared to 5% respectively. The most affected group was persons aged between and years old by 61.2%, also, males are more exposed to scorpion stings compared to females with 33% against 66% respectively. scorpion stings were recorded throughout the year, with the highest incidence and mortality rates were reported in the summer season by 44.7% n 81.1%, respectively. Approximately 94.7% of stings occur at the upper and lower limbs, in addition, the highest incidence (37.5%.) was recorded in the evening between 18-23H. The study shows that humans bears a major part of the responsibility in sting's accidents, so, all safety necessary precautions must be taken during the scorpion season. Furthermore, healthy environment plays an important role in reducing the severity of scorpionism problem
