تعد رحلة بونمان فرنسوا لويس ذات أهمية تاريخية كبيرة، من خلالها نفهم أبعاد السياسة الفرنسية حول التجارة الصحراوية وسرّ اهتمامها ببلاد الطوارق، إذ تكشف لنا الرحلة كيف كانت فرنسا تسعى جاهدة لمعرفة كل ما يتعلق بهذه التجارة والمتحكمين فيها لهدف استدراجهم بالمعاهدات والاتفاقيات إلى غاية إحكام السيطرة على هذه التجارة.
