Abstract
Saline soils cover an important part of the Earth’s surface and are
spread almost along the geographical latitude. Saline soils are found on
five continents, but their spread is wider in areas with desert and semidesert climates.
Since salty lands are considered a major environmental and
agricultural problem in the world, and in Algeria and Oued Province in
particular, their high salt content makes growing plants difficult and leads
to soil fertility. Large concentrations of dissolved salts in the soil solution
have indirect effects on plants through their effects on the soil structure
and the movement of water and oxygen in particular, which have direct
effects on the growth and development of plants.
Lands affected by salts are characterized by a morphology that
depends on the quantity and quality of salts. The surface crust of these
lands appears wet and fragile, and its color varies from light to dark.
Mechanisms of plant resistance to salinity are of great importance in
providing information about plant varieties in order to exploit them in
plant production. We have presented the types of plants according to
their classification according to their tolerance to amounts and degrees
of salinity in the medium of their cultivation. The germination stage is
considered the most critical stage in a plant’s life, as seed germination
is one of the most important stages in a plant’s life, which is greatly
affected by salinity.
