Item Cognitive Factors Influencing Second Language learning(University of Eloued جامعة الوادي, 2016-03-07) GHEDEIR BRAHIM, MohammedSecond language learners are different. It is proved that they learn with different speed and different results. The general factors that influence second language learning according to Ellis (1985) are intelligence and aptitude, and cognitive learning styles. This paper aims in the first place to elaborate cognitivism and its implications to the second language learning by analyzing the three views on second language acquisition (the behaviorist view, the innatist view, and the interactionist view). In the second place, the present study describes language proficiency and the influence of cognition on second language acquisition. Then the study sheds light on intelligence and aptitude, and cognitive learning styles as key cognitive factors influencing second language (L2) learning.Item Investigating the Linguistic Features of the E-mailing Discourse Axe Choisis : Axe 01 : Description Linguistique et analyse des discours spécialisés(University of eloued جامعة الوادي, 2016-10-19) NESBA, Asma; GHEDEIR BRAHIM, MohammedThe present study aims at investigating the linguistic features of the E-mailing discourse, being a part of a wider discourse, the electronic discourse. It is a specialized discourse that disposes certain characteristics that guarantees its distinctiveness from other types of Englishes such as political English, legal English and Medical English. These differences are shown on different linguistic levels: typographical level, lexical level, syntactic level and discourse level. A Corpus analysis of a number of 200 e-mail messages from the routine communication in work context of a private import-export company in El Oued, working as a franchisee for important international franchisors, is conducted: 100 outgoing e-mails composed by the first participant, the owner of the company and 100 incoming e-mails written by the representatives of foreign companies ( Indian Cs, Turkish Cs and a UAE C). A qualitative, descriptive and critical corpus analysis is followed based on linguistic criteria. The findings reveal that the company’s e-mail language is characterized mainly by a linguistic economy in the form of chatting abbreviations, acronyms, structural reductions, ellipsis, clippings and orthographic reduction; a linguistic innovation in the form of creative use of capitalization, spelling and punctuation to convey effects of gesture and tone as well as oral features and informality in the form of informal greetings and leave-takings. Results of the analysis are used to suggest recommendations to signal the importance of pedagogy in instructing students to use CMC properly without feeling the fear from the new technology. Students must be instructed both the well constructed texts used in academic settings as well as the specific texts used for personal interactions. E-mailing for academic and occupational purposes is different from e-mailing for maintaining social relationsItem Raising Students’ Awareness on the Importance of Cohesion in Academic Writing: The Case of the Students of the Second Year English at Hamma Lakhdar University in El-Oued, Algeria(University of eloued جامعة الوادي, 2017-11-07) GHEDEIR BRAHIM, Mohammed; NESBA, AsmaUsing linguistic ties makes the students' written productions more cohesive and understandable. However, it is noticed that they do not use grammatical cohesive devices efficiently. Thus, the present study attempts to measure the students' awareness on the importance of cohesion in academic writing. Meanwhile, this research work aims at investigating the various kinds of grammatical cohesive devices used by the students and their effects on writing cohesive discourse. It is hypothesized that the accurate use of grammatical cohesive devices would enhance students' writing. Seeking to achieve the study's aims, two questionnaires have been administered to four teachers of written expression in addition to twenty five students who have been chosen randomly. The findings of the study revealed that students do not pay much attention to the significant decisive role of cohesion in written discourse. Hence it was suggested that much space should be dedicated to the issue of cohesion in written expression course. Item The University in the Service of Professional Settings(University of eloued جامعة الوادي, 2017-04-23) Nesba, Asma; GHEDEIR BRAHIM, MohammedPolicymakers are aware of the importance of introducing English as an ESP module in different specialties in the Algerian universities. However, in the workplace, university degree holders encounter difficulties to accomplish Language-related tasks. A study was conducted then to find out the cause of the gap existing between the university and the workplace for an ultimate goal to find solutions to bridge the gap between the university and the real work context by helping new recruited workers to exploit their previous language knowledge in professional settings. The study was conducted in a private language school in a class of eight (08) adult learners receiving intensive instruction in Business English. 02 businessmen and 06 sales managers in private companies. A questionnaire was used as data gathering tool to detect their motives to have such courses. Results reveal that their resort to ESP sessions in private schools is due to their failure to exploit their language knowledge to solve practical problems in the workplace especially problems related to business correspondence . Results led to the construction of pedagogical implications that highlight the importance of ESP and languages for specific purposes in general in equipping the present university students, the future workers, with the required language skills that will satisfy the professional settings needs. Recommendations focus on the necessity of having qualified and well trained ESP teachers at the department of Economy and Management as well as building a continuum between university and the professional settings.
