    The Impact of Religion on America's Policy Decision-Makers

    The status of religion in the United States of America and its politics has been a topic of debate, mainly because of the country’s interventions and reactions to most international issues. The present research explores the role of religion in American policy formation, despite being a secular country. The aim of the study is thus to determine the significance of religion in American decision-making at present and in the past, as well as religious references in terms of policy-making discussions about social, political, or cultural aspects. This aim is reached through a qualitative content analysis of some American official documents and speeches as well as historical events and legal precedents, including, but not limited to, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Engel v. Vitale case, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and presidential speeches during several election campaigns. The research shows plenty of religious references and symbolism in the official documents and speeches of such a secular country, which indicates the role of religion in the development of American policy decision-makers, particularly in historical, legal, and political dimensions. لقد كانت مكانة الدّين في الولايات المتّحدة الأمريكيّة وسياستها موضع جدل ونقاش، وذلك بسبب تدخّلات الدّولة وردود أفعالها تجاه معظم القضايا الدّوليّة. يستكشف البحث دور الدّين في تشكيل السّياسة الأمريكيّة، رغم كونها دولة علمانيّة. وبالتّالي، فإنّ الهدف من هذه الدّراسة هو تحديد أهمّية الدّين في صنع القرار الأمريكي في الحاضر والماضي، وكذلك المرجعيّة الدّينيّة في النّقاشات التي تدور حول صنع السّياسة في الجوانب الاجتماعيّة والسّياسيّة والثّقافيّة. يتمّ الوصول إلى هذا الهدف من خلال تحليل المضمون النّوعي لبعض الوثائق والخطابات الرّسمية الأمريكيّة وكذلك الأحداث التّاريخيّة والسّوابق القانونيّة، بما في ذلك، على سبيل المثال لا الحصر، إعلان تحرير العبيد، وقضيّة إنجل ضد فيتال، وقانون استعادة الحرّيّة الدّينيّة، والخطب الرّئاسيّة خلال عدّة حملات انتخابيّة. يُظهر البحث الكثير من الإشارات والرّموز الدّينيّة في الوثائق والخطابات الرّسميّة لهذه الدّولة العلمانيّة التي تُشير إلى دور الدّين في تطوّر صانعي القرار السّياسي الأمريكي، لا سيما في الأبعاد التّاريخيّة والقانونيّة والسّياسيّة.
