Al-Ghazali considered the imamate to be the supreme leadership that combines the religious and political authorities, stressing the necessity of justice, knowledge, and competence in the imam to ensure the unity of the nation and achieve justice. He also emphasizes that morality is the basis on which politics should be based, as political institutions should be derived from Islamic moral principles to achieve stability and prosperity. With this vision, Al-Ghazali explains the close overlap between religion and politics in achieving good governance.
